Brick Lane Sunday Market
About Brick Lane Sunday Market
East London's sprawling Sunday market along Brick Lane and the Old Truman Brewery, with vintage clothing, records, bric-a-brac and some of the city's best street food.
History
Brick Lane takes its name from the brick and tile makers who worked here from the 15th century. Sunday trading flourished in the area from the 18th century, helped by the large Jewish community whose Sabbath fell on Saturday.
Successive waves of Huguenot, Jewish and Bangladeshi communities have shaped the street. Today the markets spill through the former Truman Brewery buildings and surrounding yards every Sunday.
What to Expect
Expect a crush of people by lunchtime, plenty of food smells and a lot to browse. Start at the north end for a salt beef beigel, then work through the Sunday Upmarket and vintage halls. Combine it with Columbia Road Flower Market and Old Spitalfields, which are all within a short walk.
