About Billingsgate Fish Market

The UK's largest inland fish market, where traders sell fresh and frozen seafood from around the world in a vast hall beside Canary Wharf before most of London is awake.

History

Fish has been sold at Billingsgate since at least the 16th century, and an Act of Parliament in 1699 made it a free and open market for fish. For almost 300 years it traded from the riverside at Lower Thames Street in the City, latterly in Horace Jones's arcaded market building, which still stands.

In 1982 the market moved east to a purpose-built hall on the Isle of Dogs. The City of London Corporation, which runs it, has announced plans for the market to leave its current site in the coming years, so check the latest trading information before you travel.

What to Expect

Expect wet floors, cold air, white-coated porters and the shout of traders. Arrive early — by 07:00 the best stock has gone. Many stands sell to the public by the box or kilo, so bring a cool bag and some cash, wear shoes you don't mind getting wet, and keep out of the way of moving trolleys.
