Ridley Road Market
About Ridley Road Market
One of East London's great everyday street markets, with around 150 stalls selling fruit and veg, fish, meat, fabrics and household goods at famously low prices.
History
Street trading on Ridley Road dates back to the 1880s. In the 20th century the market reflected Dalston's changing communities, from Jewish traders to Caribbean, African and Turkish families.
The market is also remembered for the 1940s and 1960s street battles in which local people confronted fascist rallies — an episode dramatised in the BBC series Ridley Road.
What to Expect
Expect a proper working market rather than a tourist attraction: loud, friendly and very good value. Come for groceries, fabrics and snacks, and explore Dalston's bars and restaurants afterwards.
